Hema Ojha
Hema Ojha was 25 years old when she joined EPSA Nepal in April 2016. Born in the Far Eastern region of Bajhanga, she moved to Kathmandu at the age of 20 to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in teaching. Hema is the only sister among two brothers and the sole disabled member of her family. She has deformed legs that make her extremely short and unable to bend her knees or stand for long periods. Despite her physical challenges, her family’s farmland provided enough support for her to attend ten years of school in her village. However, her life took a tragic turn when she lost her father at the age of 18.
After finishing her studies, Hema struggled to find employment in her chosen profession. She received some handicraft training from another organization, but job opportunities were scarce. In 2015, she contacted EPSA Nepal but was informed there were no openings at the time. Nevertheless, encouraged by another EPSA member, she persisted and eventually secured a place at the organization. At EPSA Nepal, Hema learned to sew and acquired additional handicraft skills. Her experience at EPSA has inspired her to dream of returning to her village to teach these valuable skills to other individuals with disabilities, empowering them to achieve greater independence and contribute to their community.
